On September 26, 2014, the trainee teachers commandeered several buses to travel to Mexico City to commemorate the anniversary of the 1968 Tlatelolco Massacre of students and civilians. The forty three trainee teachers were arrested during a confrontation with police and handed over to a crime syndicate where it is believed they were killed. The disappearance of the students became a huge political scandal and led to nationwide public demonstrations.
